Whey Vs Casein Protein

People are often asking what is the difference between whey and casein protein? Which is a better supplement for MMA athletes or for increasing strength? We decided to give you an over view of each, showing the general characteristics, benefits and disadvantages.

 

Why take protein supplements at all?

Protein provides the body with amino acids, which is what muscle is used from and can also be used as a source of energy. Casein Protein

The majority of protein found in milk is a type of casein protein. The body digests casein slowly, and the amino acids it provides are gradually absorbed by the body as it digests.

Advantages: Slow digestion means your body is constantly absorbing amino acids.

Disadvantages: After a workout, your body needs protein to be absorbed straight away which casein doesn’t offer.

 

Whey Protein

Whey is the more commonly found protein found around health food stores and supplement providers and is seen to be used more regularly by MMA athletes. Whey protein is an excess product from making cheese and a small amount of this type of protein is found in milk.

 

Advantages: It’s absorbed fast by the body and promotes protein synthesis within the muscles. This makes it great for drinking immediately after a workout.

Disadvantages: Any excess protein not absorbed goes straight through the body. Due to the fact it is used (or not used!), casein would also be needed you get more regular protein absorbed into the body.

 

Overall verdict

Both types of protein offer opposite benefits. Taking both whey and casein together ensures that you get the instant protein hit you need after w workout, whilst also having protein slowly absorbed by the body whilst you are recovering from a strenuous workout.

 

Since milk is predominantly casein, a good idea is to buy a whey protein supplement and then mix with milk. This ensures you get both proteins in a single serving!
